Scanning in History

On our last trip to Upstate NY to the old homestead, I inherited a number of very old photos. Old enough that they are on a heavy type of board, rather than the typical type of photo paper you see today.

My goal was to get these all scanned in and to dispose of the originals, but the more I think about it, a large part of what makes these photos as special as they are is the material they are on. So, I am left with the quandary of what to do with these once I have scanned them in.

I'll worry about that another day ... in the meantime, here is one of the photos:

As a family historian I urge you to NOT throw away the original 'prints.' They will be priceless to some future great-grandchild, etc. AND- if you know the identity of each person pictured, please be sure to place an acid-free archival-quality label on the back with the name. I have quite a few pictures and no living person in the fmily knows who they are anymore - which is heart-breaking to a family historian/genealogist. See "Photographs & Old Memories" at Cyndi's List (geneaolgy site) for info on dating and maintaining old photographs: http://www.cyndislist.com/photos.htm.

I think I will bring in one of these pictures and let you have a look at them. Maybe you can tell me how to salvage them, as the edges of the board they are imprinted on are cracking and breaking off.
